There are 133 swimmers (2.7% of all finishers) who completed 10 or more GCBSs,
and 11 of them completed 20 or more events. Upon the 10th
completion, 15th completion, or the 20th completion, swimmers
receives a special "longevity" award from the Bay Swim Director to
commemorate their endurance and commitment to the event. |
Qualifications
All swimmers with 9, 14, or 19 previously recorded Bay Swim finishes will receive a
specially inscribed award plaque upon their completion of GCBS 2009. According to
the Bay Swim Archives records provided on this web site (see above
PDF files), the following swimmers are
eligible for these awards on June 14, 2009, after they enter and successfully finish the event
(see Rules):

has 24 Bay Swim completions (82-91, 93-97, 99-03, 05-08). He also
finished a solo swim on June 14, 1992 (the day of the canceled Hanks
event); Brian's name was inadvertently omitted from the 1989 GCBS
results. "19 completions" are in keeping with the rules (stated
below) of officially recorded completions during1986-2008.

Rules for
Award Qualification
The inscribed Completion Award plaque recognizes officially recorded Bay Swim
completions from 1986 to 2009. This means that your name needs to be associated
with a finishing time and a finishing place in the official Bay Swim results for each
applicable year of record. Paying the entry fee and not showing up or participating
in the event and not finishing do not qualify as a completion.
For example, there are no records for the hundreds of swimmers who
were pulled out of the water in 1991 and 1992.If
your name appears above, you have already satisfied the qualifications and you need to do
nothing beyond completing another Bay Swim. The appropriate award plaque with
your name inscribed on it (as it's spelled above) will be presented to you after you
finish your next GCBS. If the spelling of your name is wrong, please contact:

To find out how many GCBS completions are recorded under your name, download and search
the PDF files at the top of this web page. If you believe there is an error in these
records, contact:
bayswim@gmail.com
(subject line of email: "GCBS Award Correction"). Please do not hassle the
Bay Swim Director or LIN-MARK -- they do not have these records. In order to
allow time for the inscribing of the award, please submit award
correction requests before May 1st.
In order for a correction to be made, you need to be specific about the error.
For example, please provide the year, time, and place information that you believe is in
error. Such details can be found here.
A common correction may be a name change associated with a marriage. There could also
have been misspellings, mismatches due to common last names (e.g.,
Smith or Miller), or other glitches in the official results. Errors could have
also occurred upon transcribing the results to the electronic records on this web site.
If substantiated, these GCBS Archives records will be happily corrected.
Hard copies of the original Bay Swim results as provided by the Race
Director are on
file for all prior years back to 1986. They will be used to settle any
disputes. If anyone has copies of the official results for the
Bay Swim events conducted by Fletcher Hanks or by Brian Earley in 1984 and 1985, please
provide them and the data will be added these Archives (with a big "thank
you").
Accounting practices and record keeping were not as rigorous in the early years of the
Bay Swim as they have been in recent years. There is a small chance that a swimmer may
have completed a Bay Swim over a decade ago that did not make it onto the official record
of the event. Unless you can provide evidence of the error (e.g., a letter from
Fletcher Hanks; case in point), such claims cannot be substantiated
at this late time. Sorry, but you needed to sort out such mistakes with the race
officials at the time. |
